Launching 2012 with all its promises for improvement and change has a little bit more significance to me this year than it has in years past. While most of my previous new years resolutions involved lofty idea of imposing change on fairly non-flexible preexisting structures (“I will go to the gym 4 times a week, in between working for 50hrs, trying to sleep, cooking food, and not letting my social life disappear”), I have done a pretty radical shift this year, and eliminated the non-flexible structures, ie my day job. And honestly its a great relief. I have been meaning to do this for years. And while terrifying sometimes there is no other way for it - you just have to jump (something I decided to get tattooed on myself in order to try and live up to said life motto).

And while terrifying sometimes there is no other way for it – you just have to jump (something I decided to get tattooed on myself in order to try and live up to said life motto).

One of the more major projects we are embarking on this month involves building a home studio – yes. Really. And no, probably not in the way that you are thinking. We are fortunate enough to live in a Parkdale apartment that is larger than it should be for the rent we pay. Its an above ground, one bedroom plus den in an old Victorian with bay windows, and stained glass. Its the den that is going to be the subject of our renovation. I am surprised it not something we have done earlier to be honest, as it seems all we have done since I entered the picture of max’s life (no pun intended), has been to rearrange and reorganize things. But I guess it makes sense now that I am here full-time. It also makes sense financially, as it eliminates the need for space rentals for more simplistic solo portraits. On a selfish note, I am excited because despite the obvious benefits career wise, I now have some blog subjects for the next few weeks.

And for those of you who haven’t heard, we are hanging our first ever show at the Pilot Bar in Yorkville on the 8th of January. This show will run til early February, but we will be having a launch party on the 16th, so if you are interested in our work and want to come say hi, please do. We will be showcasing some work from a shoot here on the site (with a couple unreleased shots), as well as a completely unreleased shoot.

I know a lot of you who are here as a result of max’s old work were big fans of her DIY stuff. In which case this month is going to be especially treat filled for you, what with the home studio building, as well as the fact that we are mounting the framing of this show in old salvaged windows and screens, combined with the really exciting news that the Old Man (aka Zeebo) is making a return visit to the city. And we all know that when Zeebo comes around, shit gets interesting. Maybe I will even convince Max to write a couple of blogs herself? Better get those bribing scones on the go…

I have a confession to make. Technology scares me. Which is ironic given that I am writing this first blog entry. Max would affectionately calls me a ‘ludite’, which makes me feel as though I have stumbled into some nonconsensual dungeons and dragon-esque situation. I had to look up the term to be honest. According to the urban dictionary (the ultimate non-disputable truth site)

1. ludite: A person who is averse to adapting to technology.

IE: He is a ludite because he does not want to use myspace as a means of communication, in order to manage his relationships–business, or otherwise.

I wouldn’t say that I am adverse to learning new technologies. Baking, yes, but technology? Ok maybe I am, but can you blame me? Social networking is like walking into a bar and being introduced to three blondes who all look the same but drink very different things. Then add hard wires and alerts and shit. I can barely manage to find the way to turn on the alarm on my iPhone, so when Max comes and tells me (before coffee, mind you) that I am now in charge of updating all the social networking/media things, it kind of makes me want to punch her in the throat. Cos honestly, I don’t get it. I mean I do, I understand the website, I understand the Twitter (and I especially love how bloody short it is), and I get Facebook. Cos everyone wants to know what max&gna ‘is’ while simultaneously untagging their drunk ass photos from the night before. But I am intimidated by the multifaceted nature of all of them. I mean, Google+. I know we have it, its great to have a presence there, but honestly, what presence are they looking for? In the world of the blonde analogy, Google+ would be the bad bleach job. Ok, thats harsh. But I still don’t get it. I’ll blunder through it til the masses speak to what they want to hear from this new platform. A lot of industry people are making it a habit of creating a presence there, and so shall we. As I have discovered, accredited people are far better at making this call than I am.

The website has taken longer than we anticipated, which I apologize for. We held back on some shoots that we’ve done, but we’ve instead decided to filter all the traffic to the website and introduce to our work to as many people as possible. We have a lot more planned for the coming months. This blog will serve as a running monologue/events calendar for what we are up to. I am not going to endeavor to make this a formal space. Hopefully, for those professionally minded folks who visit here because they are deciding whether or not they want to throw money at us, it will show you a little more of a personal side to the work/ thoughts we have about what we do. To our peers, we hope that you find some amusing self-reflective scenarios and stories. To our friends, we hope this provides you with an excuse as to why we didn’t attend your dinner part last week. To our families, these are the reasons you continue to send us Metro gift cards.

Kidding aside, its nice to feel as though we finally have a place that we can call ‘home base’.

Oh, right, say hi to those aforementioned blondes:
